12 Kids, 6 Languages

My oldest daughter, K, just started preschool 2 days ago. She did great, probably better than me and I am generally not a sappy whimp. Yes, I teared up driving home after dropping her off. On her first day of school, upon entering her classroom and taking a tour around the room, K sits down [...]

First why times infinity

K has gone from her first why to “Why?” “But why? “But why?” for every answer I give- just as a proper toddler should do. Usually the questioning ends at the third or fourth “why” and generally has something to do with an answer similar to, “Because you’ll get hurt and will cry [...]

A Must-Have

This post has nothing whatsoever to do with language development, but I just have to share this parenting tip. The topic is bath time for babies and toddlers. I was using all those cute little washcloths that parents inevitably get at baby showers to bathe my children for the past 2+ years [...]

Not a baby, not a baby…

“Not a baby, not a baby…” is my mantra these days. Having two children barely 16 months apart, certain things happen I think. Namely, the older child, K, gets all the attention because she is much more demanding and clearly verbalizes what she wants and the second child, A, is perpetually The Baby, even when [...]

A First Why- August 6, 2008

“Emmi, päike läheb looja.”
“Päike läheb looja.”
“Emmi, miks päike läheb looja?”
Translation:
“Emmi, the sun is setting.”
“The sun is setting.”
“Emmi, why is the sun setting?”
This was K’s first “why” question and I though it was a great one. It also happened in Estonian which was also interesting.
Wednesday, August 6th was a tough day for me as I [...]

A Little Help from the Grandparents

My parents and sister visited over the past 2 weeks and we had a lot of fun! As a mother, it’s always a HUGE help to have family in town to help corral the kids. As a mother of bilingual children, my family has been a significant boost to my oldest daughter K’s Estonian speaking [...]

Almost embarrassing

I video conference with my parents weekly as it is a great way to keep in touch with grandparents who live over 3000 miles away. We were video conferencing yesterday and for the most part K would speak to my parents, who speak Estonian, only in English. I couldn’t help but feel a [...]

First Words

I can’t help but wonder in what language A will speak when she starts talking. She’s 16 months old and saying a few words here and there along with a lot of phrases that I just don’t understand yet. She understands just about everything I tell her in Estonian which I continue to find amazing [...]

Kindle Update

In a nod to my previous posts about the Amazon Kindle, I have now read quite a few books, novels, and blogs with the device. I am very pleased with my purchase, except that I paid full price before Amazon reduced the price. The price of being an early adopter I suppose. [...]

The impact of TV watching on bilingual language development

I speak in Estonian with K and A 100% of the time, but K answers mainly in English and I’d estimate speaks English about 95% of the time. This has happened since she started watching DVD’s. At first she was speaking in English when she was in fantasy play and Estonian with [...]
