Raising my children bilingually

Using Babies and Mothers

I have come to the belief that the best way to encourage any kind of change is to scare mothers into believing that something is bad, dangerous or harmful to their babies. The media latch onto ANYTHING that could possibly harm a baby. It works. Today’s issue for me is bisphenol A prompted by a news story on NPR and a call from my mother-in-law. I have known about this for the past 3 years and it is in the baby bottles I use. (Not to mention camping and all manner of other water bottles adults use. It’s even in dental sealant mainly used on children’s teeth.) I just choose to believe the research that says that in the concentrations that my babies might be exposed, it is not dangerous. But, the media keeps hounding me about it. Leave it to a well-meaning mother-in-law to scare you after the fact when the danger is pretty much a non-issue and any harm has already been done. Today I was actually considering buying new bottles, even though my youngest is just about off the bottle. At least now there are obvious alternatives that are readily available. This was not the case a couple of years ago. So, these days, even raising a child in a bubble is dangerous, it’s not even the suffocation hazard that much plastic could pose, but the plastic itself releases dangerous chemicals. Perhaps I should just pack us up and move into a cave in the woods. But wait, there are mold spores and of course acid rain not to mention bears in them thar woods. These days, we just have to pick the lesser of the evils out there and for me, it means I will continue using my baby bottles.

Some Reasons Why I Love My Kindle

  • I can “turn” the page without adjusting my book or myself. I never realized how much I did this, but it has become obvious as I notice on every page turn that, “Wait, I don’t have to adjust the book so the page will turn.”
  • Dictionary on board! I have a fairly strong vocabulary, but with the Kindle’s easy to use dictionary which I take advantage of regularly, I am learning all manner of new words instead of just guessing from the context and not worrying about the stray unknown word.
