Discussion Groups Get Personal

After browsing the Amazon Kindle discussion groups and subscribing to the one that is most likely to give me hope about when my Kindle might be closer to being shipped, I can’t help but to comment on the content. First, I admit that I have been a lurker to this point and will add my two cents once I get that golden ticket, aka the Amazon shipping soon notification. Until that time, I skim the messages and have come to the conclusion that most people probably have a lot of free time. I remember having free time and might have joined the discussions I suppose. Mostly my “free time” came at work either at lunch or depending on the job, moments when I just couldn’t bear to do my real job and had to take a break. When I was unemployed by choice I guess I had some free time as well, though I didn’t choose to spend it at a computer other than to do email or photos. These days I don’t have much free time at all and am fortunate to get a blog post up. As for the discussion group content, it can be amusing, clever, boring, repetitive, desperate, weird, informative, insightful, and personal. So many people offer a topic-related comment coupled with personal details (e.g. dog just died, knee surgery, vacation, etc). Now that I think about it, the personal details are often something that is “special” to the writer and something that is prominent in their lives for just a moment in time. People reaching out to people to share a spark of themselves. I wonder when I finally comment that “My Kindle is coming! My Kindle is coming!” what, if any, personal details I will feel compelled to share? I’ll let you know!
