Raising my children bilingually

01 Apr

No distractions please

Go ahead, shut down your email program, silence your cell phone, grab that remote and turn off your TV and radio and read this article from Monday’s Seattle Times, Nothing distracts retro writer. Okay, now stop surfing the net, don’t click on any bright, blinking links and really think about this. Going low tech on your high tech devices as an improvement? What is this world coming to? Should I just cancel my Kindle order now? (Never! Where the hell is the damn thing already?!) But seriously, sometimes you need to be free of distractions to really have those deep thoughts or to accomplish that task that just doesn’t seem to get done.  And if you’ve forgotten what it’s like, just you and a blank piece of paper or screen with a blinking cursor, give it a try.  You might be surprised by what happens (or doesn’t!)

I happen to be a person who doesn’t like background noise.  I can’t read with the radio or TV on without getting annoyed.  I don’t even like paying the bills with background noise and I even shut down my email program to blog or do anything that requires the slightest bit of concentration as I am otherwise obsessive about checking “new mail” and I end up on a tangent somewhere. I’m well aware how many in our society thrive on the distractions, but at what cost?  Sure, your quantity if things accomplished might be impressive, but what about quality?

So as the article mentions, go ahead and use that “hide others” command- I’m a die hard Mac user and have been for decades- you might just accomplish more with less.
