Tokyo can be very relaxing

I’m considering some international travel for next year with my family which reminded me of when I was in Tokyo for 2 weeks for work a couple of years back.  For anyone who has seen pictures of Tokyo, I am sure bright neon signs come to mind in a dizzying display of light and color.  I was expecting it all to be a bit overwhelming, but for me, Tokyo was oddly relaxing.  As long as you feel safe and know where you are going, when you can’t read a word, then the display is more artistic and decorative and not overwhelming in the least.  I distinctly remember thinking this as I walked downtown in the shopping district.  This is probably the same phenomena that happens when I try to read a scientific paper and don’t understand any of the words though they are in English.  My mind wanders very quickly as cognition just isn’t there.  Actually, I would probably do better with a scientific picture book, perhaps in neon, as it would most likely hold my attention longer than black and white text.  Pictures and diagrams can be important.
