Sometimes I Read Things I Wish I Hadn’t
Here’s an article I could have done without, “Where Horton sits on abortion.” Does everything really have to be politicized? I haven’t seen the movie, “Horton Hears a Who” and have been planning to. I would have preferred to see the movie without any preconceived notions other than, it’s Dr. Seuss! Now I fear I will go to watch the movie and will keep looking for hidden messages having to do with pro-life instead of enjoying the more innocent messages that this movie undoubtedly has. The article does a wonderful job of being against co-opting a children’s movie for political purposes, but I’d just rather not know about this issue at all. Thanks to the people at “The Week Daily” for making sure I didn’t miss this bit of news.
In many cases, I have to admit that I subscribe to the notion, “Ignorance is bliss.” I enjoy being an active participant in society and sharing in many of the common experiences and being aware of our society’s “stories.” But then there are things like this that I could do without. I love the fact that there are radical activists out there(the ones that don’t do harm, though being law abiding is optional- their choice- though I am strictly a law abiding citizen to the highest and sometimes most annoying degree). The activists do a great job of raising awareness so that public policy and sentiment is swayed a little bit with a moderate outcome in many cases which I believe to be a good thing. But please leave my children’s stories alone and go chain yourself to a tree somewhere.
